It all stated when I tried to grow a few vegetables in small containers on the front deck. It did not take long to realize I wanted more space, and longer growing seasons.
Then things fell into place: My father-in-law is a contractor - he can build stuff! He also had a stockpile of used sliding glass doors made from tempered glass. Hmmmm....
GLASS: The glass panels from the sliding doors are 34x72 inches. The greenhouse is 3 panels wide, and 6 panels long. (Approx 10x19 feet when framed) The roof is 7 panels wide, allowing a 8inch (or so) overhang on either end.
FRAME:The framing is all pressure treated fir. Cedar would be nice, but I could have built a real house for that price! Ok, not really. But almost.
FLOOR: I used 1/2" - 3/4" crushed rock, no fines. It is perfect. It settles down good, unlike pea gravel that just rolls around. I put down about 3-4 inches inside and about 3 inches in a 12" border around the structure, for two reasons: 1) Rain runoff from the roof will not splash mud onto the glass now, and 2) weeds and grass will be much easier to trim back away from the greenhouse.
WATER / ELECTRIC: Water was run from a line in the yard. A spigot was installed on the outside for easy access and plumbing ran inside that is capped for now, until I decide how it should be routed. Electric was run from the house and will be determined later how everything will be wired (exhaust fan, lighting, etc..)
